This wonderfully floral aromatic plant essence is possibly the most widely used essential oil. This is in great part due to its incredible versatility. Lavender has been called, among other things, "a veritable medicine chest in a bottle" and "the Swiss Army Knife of essential oils". Lavender is credited with many qualities. It is said to be a pain reliever, anti-depressant, anti-septic, anti-bacterial, an insect repellent, a decongestant and a sedative, among many other things.
Lavender was first recognized as a treatment for burns. It is very effective in reducing pain, scarring, infection and other effects of a bad burn. Lavender essential oil is gentle enough to be applied directly to a burn without any carrier oil. It was by submerging his burned hand in a vat of pure lavender oil that Rene Maurice Gattefosse discovered the essential oil's dramatic ability to not only heal the burned skin on his hand, but to aid in pain reduction. As a result of this happenstance, Gattefosse began researching essential oils and ultimately coined the term "aromatherapie" which led to the more modern day "aromatherapy".
