Foot Care: Dry Cracked Feet
Dry, Cracked, And Rough Feet: Treatment and Protection
Dry, cracked feet (xeorosis) is a condition that occurs primarily on the bottom and outside edges of the heels of your feet. In some cases the cracks can be quite deep, but difficult to see if the dry skin has built up around them. Some people are more prone to dry skin on the heels and soles of their feet than others, but almost everyone experiences foot cracks at some point in their lives.
These foot problems occur because of the body’s inability to provide natural oils and moisture to the area and the skin’s reduced capacity to retain moisture. Research shows that the problem has a variety of causes including aging, inactive sweat glands, inadequate water intake, poor eating habits, harsh chemical/detergent based soaps, obesity, long periods of standing, and exposure to weather viabacked shoes and sandals.
If neglected and allowed to persist, untreated cracks may deepen to the extent that the dermis layer of the skin is affected. Feet may then become extremely uncomfortable, making standing or walking very painful. Deep cracks may eventually bleed and become infected, leading to more serious foot problems. Especially in the case of diabetics, or persons with impaired vascular sufficiency, treatment by a doctor may be necessary.
