Skin Disorders and Diseases
Skin Disorders
Although many factors determine which of us are going to have skin disorders and when, one factor stands out as common to most skin disorders: almost everyone who has a skin disorder has skin cells that have lost some of their capacity for retaining moisture. This lack of capacity for moisture retention is at the root of most skin disorders.

Skin Diseases
Skin disorders include many skin diseases. On this page, we identify the symptoms and causes of skin diseases that are associated with dry skin.
Eczema
Symptoms of this skin disease: dryness of the skin, inflammation, persistent itching, blistering, and frequent skin infections.
Cause: the chronic, adult form of eczema usually occurs in persons with a family history of allergies.

Perioral Dermatitis
Symptoms of this skin disease: pink bumps appear around the mouth and sometimes around the eyes; then the skin becomes drier and there is scaling and reddening of the affected area.
Cause: there is some evidence that fungi and bacteria may be underlying causes of this disease.

Psoriasis
Symptoms of this skin disease: the skin becomes inflamed, producing red, thickened areas with silvery scales, most often on the scalp, elbows, knees, and lower back.
Cause: most likely an abnormality in the functioning of white cells in the blood stream triggering inflammation in the skin; flare-ups sometimes occur in the winter, as a result of dry skin.

Rosacea
Symptoms of this skin disease: a flushing or subtle redness on the cheeks, nose, chin or forehead that at first comes and goes, but ultimately stays as persistent bumps. The facial skin typically gets very dry.
Cause: a larger amount of blood flows through the blood vessels and the vessels expand under the skin to handle the flow.
